Elegy for Cookie

Cookie and Candy

I buried five kilos of love in the yard –
the amount of weight I should lose from my belly
I lost from my heart.
Once aflame with pride and hunger
death did not become her.
Her coffin a cardboard box, her grave
an indent of dirt strewn with half-composted egg shells
and avocado skins. A mere matter of hours previous
her purring form had lain, chest to chest, against me.
‘Such is life’ – the strange expression people use.
She was too bright for it.
